How My Appliques and Flowers are made.

Every applique and flower is hand crochet with cotton crochet thread or quality textured yarn.  I usually have storage bins of thread and yarns available so I have an array of colors to choose from.

After sketching out a rough draft on graph paper, I begin to test make the item jotting down stitches and making sure to meaure along the way.

Once  a basic design is created, I make several of them with different size needles to make sure I get the look I want.  Each applique will always vary slightly in size depending on the size of the crochet thread or yarn and the needle size.  That is why you see in my listings on etsy that the size is approximately.

After the applique or flower is crochet it is checked to make sure all threads are weaved in, and if it is made out of a rayon, nylon or a thread that easily frays I use fray check on the ends to prevent it from splitting.

If a pearl, bead, button or accent is added it is sewn in using at least 12 thread passes.  T then tug on the embellishment to make sure it is securely attached.

Another step that I take with my appliques is to back them with a fuseable interfacing.  This is ironed onto the backs of most of the appliques that have beading, extensive embroidery work, and/or attachments.  This not only protects the applique's sewing threads but gives the applique a firm consistency.  This is especially helpful when using them for hair clips or pony tail holders as the applique will not curl, it retains it shape which customers love.

After you read all this it takes me 20 to 30 minutes an applique to make, not including the time it took to design them.

I hope this gives you a little insight into the making of my appliques and would love to read your comments
